In Palm Springs: South Neighborhoods

The Ship of the Desert , located at 1995 Camino Monte off Palm Canyon and La Verne Way, is an hillside Art Deco palace, very streamline moderne. It was restored recently after a fire gutted much of the building's interior. Unfortunately, the man overseeing the restoration wouldn't let us inside to take pictures, so all we have is the exterior shot above. This less-traveled area of Palm Springs has a lot of interesting early '60s architecture, as discovered when we accidentally detoured into the neighborhoods around the Canyon Country Club. The homes in this area (right) are surprisingly hip - all gleaming white surfaces, patterned brick walls, modular forms, and immaculate lawns.
