The soaring canopies of Albert Frey's Tramway gas station are a Palm Springs landmark. The structure greets motorists coming from the East like the welcoming wings of a giant, spacey bird. It's been restored recently as an art gallery - about as far from its greasy origins as you can get. Frey also designed the Valley Station (right) for the world famous Palm Springs Tramway.
When you get to the top of the tramway, tear yourself away from the breathtaking views for a minute and breathe in Stewart Williams' mountaintop tram station. Woodsy ceiling beams, huge windows and natural rock walls give the place a chunky, "North by Northwest" feeling. This is the cafeteria.
