Blue Plate Special

This week's LA Weekly contains a review of Pann's, one of the few genuine midcentury diners left in that area. Looks like they're still serving great food, but it's disappointing to read that they retrofitted the place with contrived "nifty '50s" decor. Damn. Denny's has done the same thing in recent years - a shame, since a Happy Days look doesn't jibe with the fantastic early '60s Googie architecture on the older Denny's. I suppose the hungry Joes and Tiffanys of America can relate better to a cheesy approximation of nostalgia than the real thing. Sad, man, sad.

PS On an LA trip a few years back, we drove across town (in horrible traffic) for dinner at Encounter at LAX. At one point, we actually passed Pann's and marvelled at its neon sign. The Encounter experience was okay, but in retrospect I wish we'd stopped at Pann's instead.

Sounds like the Happy Days look was back in the 80s and that the place has been "restored to its late-'50s brilliance". When I was there around 10 years ago it looked to me like it had been the same since the '50s, I never knew it had been restored.
