Remembering the Short-Fingered Vulgarian

spymag.jpg I paged through fawny.org's Ten Years Ago In SPY with warm nostalgia. The insightful commentary comes from a designer's persective, full of notes on awkward letterspacing, typos, and ill-chosen fonts like Vendome and Belwe (the typeface equivalents of used Betamax cassettes). Amazing how something so fresh and different back then appears so cringingly dated now. Those ads, eek!! Even so, I harbor much fondness for my stack of old SPYs from its 1988-92 heyday. The mag's editorial mission of snarky humor, meta-criticism and insider obsessiveness lives on today in a million weblogs.

Matt, if I had been smart like you, I would have kept all my old SPY magazines as well. (*sigh*)
