Good Grief!

peanutspins.jpg
Pictured here is one of the birthday gifts the wonderful Christopher gave me: a complete set of early Peanuts pins! I've seen these individually here and there in antique stores, but never all together like this. They probably date from the late '50s. The newest character here, Pig-Pen, debuted in 1954 while the next major character, Sally, wouldn't appear until 1959.
By the way, the second volume of Fantagraphics' beautifully designed Complete Peanuts hardback books is out now -- and it also makes for a fine gift.

How did you do that? I just checked Amazon this morning for the status of CP53-54 and it still said "not yet released". Now, though, it says the book is out. Curious. Maybe they'll ship my order soon! I'm dying to read the strips, as well as the Krazy Kat volumes I ordered at the same time...

Nice. I got the Shermy pin for myself about ten years ago, in Saint Louis, and it is still the envy of all who see it. In retrospect, I should have bought them all, since I never saw them for sale again..

I have the whole set hanging on my wall.. my girlfriend gave it to me a few years back.. I think the faces look a bit computer pixelated on mine.. do yours look like this?

and the second volume of peanuts has totally blown me away, much more so than the first volume for some reason.. like the strip of charlie brown in the rain on page 72

whooaaaaaaaaa

who the heck was shermy?!

Posted by: cazoo at October 14, 2004 07:06 PM

i think shermie was the shepherd in the peanuts christmas special. cool gift!

Shermy was a major character early on, along with Violet and (non-Peppermint) Patty. Shermy had the very first line of dialogue in a Peanuts strip: "Well! Here comes ol' Charlie Brown ... good ol' Charlie Brown ... Yes, sir! ... good ol' Charlie Brown ... how I hate him!"

Those three characters seemed to fade out by the mid-'60s. Granted, Shermy was never a very strong personality, but I liked how feisty Violet and the first Patty were. (I'm curious to get to the Fantographics books where they begin to fade out ... maybe the three of them got abducted by aliens? It seems they just disappeared.)

Shermy is the Pete Best of the Peanuts world.

My jealousy knows no bounds. And yes, the Fantagraphics volumes are really nice. Way to go Seth!

Very nice present, Matt. Happy belated birthday wishes.

The Peanuts FAQ lists the last sightings of early
Peanuts characters like Shermy, Patty,
Violet Gray and 5 (and yes, Shermy was
the Shepherd).

PS
Fantagraphics shipped the second volume to me
last week.
