My Kingdom for a Taco Dorito

tacochips.gif Gael's post on Salsa Verde Doritos reminded me of the real ignored stepchild in the Dorito's family: Taco Doritos. The original Taco Doritos were da bomb, snackwise - intensely flavorful with the perfect blend of spices. Their elusiveness - for every ten bags of Nacho Cheese, grocery stores would have one bag of Taco - made them that much more special. Then, in the early '90s, the company made a New Coke-style corporate blunder by substituting a sickeningly sweet "Taco Bell" flavor for the beloved original. Disaster. Doritos surprisingly has the old Taco variety listed on their website, but they're only available in limited quanities in the Midwest. Never fear, however - according to the Tacoheads on this thriving support forum, taco-flavored Doritos Rollitos are nearly as tasty as the real thing.

Dude, Doritos have MSG in them. I guess you're OK with that.

Mmmm ... MSG.

So I'm the only guy in the world with a taste for Funyuns?

Sure, MSG is bad, but it's nothing compared to Olestra and it's wonderful warning label regarding "loose stool."

I'm quite happy the low-fat, Olestra-bearing psuedo-diet stuff has mostly disappeared (or at least gone under popular radar).

Have you people no taste buds???
Not just the flavor of the TACO FLAVOR Doritos was AWESOME, but the wonderful texture and triangular shape of them are what made them so pleasurable to eat. Just toss them into your MOUTH!!!! They were thin yet crunchy, almost crispy. These "NEW" Rollitos are repulsive & hard, with a thickness and texture that reminds me of stale tortilla chips--they are simply unenjoyable to eat..the flavor alone cannot make up for it...Lonely taste buds here*Bring back the taCo!~

June 2005 update; Frito-Lay are apparently testing out Taco flavored Doritos again. I stumbled upon some in Missouri over the weekend. Get this - they taste like the original Taco flavored Doritos. Really! Or at least very close. I detect a hint of something extra in them, but it's been 15 years since I last had real Taco-flavored Doritos, so I could be wrong. But trust me, I have followed all the various flavors they've test-marketed over the years, and this is the real deal, or the closest to it I've tasted.

Long live the Taco flavored Dorito!

I thought I was the only one who loved and missed the ORIGINAL TACO DORITOS. alot of people don't even remember them. I HATED the Taco Bell ones, they sucked!! I wonder if there is a way to contact the company about bringing them back. I wish I could find the new ones they are testing. Have not tried Rolitos yet but I think I will. There were alot of Dorito and Frito flavors I do not remember. Three cheese Doritos suck. The guacomole ones are pretty good. I would just be in heaven to eat some original TACO DORITOS!!!! BRING EM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
