Hoedown on Channel 379
Lately we've been noticing something called
RFD-TV in the hinterlands of our satellite channel lineup. In between more prosaic fare like
Equine Special and
I Love Trains, this rural-oriented network is playing cool old country music teevee shows from the '60s and '70s. I'm especially liking
The Porter Wagoner Show and its
Nudie suits, cheap-o sets, Dolly Parton in her mile-hile haired youth, and the world's corniest old coot comedian. I caught an episode of
The Wilburn Brothers Show with special guest Loretta Lynn, brimming with country sunshine 35 years before
Van Lear Rose. Nifty!

Haaha, all before my prime.

Wow. Add The Gospel Jubilee and you have my 60s/70s trifecta.
RFD-TV is among my fave networks on DirecTV. Calf roping! Horse auctions! Shows about collectable tractors! That model train show you mentioned! The old country music variety hours! The friggin Farm Report, fer cryin out loud! What is not to love?
To mention my mother twice. She never missed an episode.
When I was growing up in Georgia these shows were on all the time. Porter actually came to Savannah to play at some honky tonk called the Bamboo Ranch. I can remember Dolly before the days of boob enhancement.
Funny thing is that many years later I suddenly discovered the joys of Hank Williams, Sr. and some of his latter-day followers up to the mid-60s. Not that I could look at his later incarnations. The rhinestones on his suits just plain blinded me.
What a surprise to turn on RFD-TV and see Loretta Lynn on the Wilburn Brothers Show again. It was 1968 and I was 13 the first time I saw Loretta Lynn. I became an immediate fan. I own all of her original Decca and MCA recorded albums. Keep the shows coming. I would love to have copies of all those shows to add to my huge Loretta Lynn collection. Loretta's music has greatly influenced my life.
Just so sad that RFD is only on satellite. A lot of us city folk "trapped like a duck in a pen" would give eye-teeth (or, whatever teeth survived to adulthood - HA!) to see some rural programming like the Porter Show. I've managed to get my hands on a scant few of his early things with Miss Dolly in the past, and am totally addicted. Super cool to hear her sing songs from the early 70s that she still does today.. Songs that are INCREDIBLE today, and how they started. Wonder how many of those performances were before they were even recorded, or if they ever WERE put to vinyl.. Oh well, maybe COMCAST will add RFD someday. HA!
