Bride of Lichtenstein
Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein - a slow-loading but worthwhile page comparing the Pop Art master's paintings with the comic book panels he appropiated from. Via
News From Me, who has
issues with Lichtenstein's borrowing. I can understand his point, but to me Lichtenstein used pop culture imagery in the same way that a talented hip-hop artist uses sampling. In both cases, the many instances when it's done badly by hacks cloud out the few genuinely brilliant people (like Lichtenstein) who can create new art from old and cannily place it in a new context.

After seeing these comics exhibited at MoMA's High/Low show in 1990, I tracked down most of them at comic book shops on the road.
Every once in a while, I'll check in for duplicates, since the orignals are almost always in poor condition; they're not valuable or sought after by comic collectors, only art geeks, so they're rarely preserved well.
I envy that you got to see that "High and Low" show!!
It is time that the
original comic book
Artist's Roy Lichtenstein
