Magazine Covers 2 Electric Boogaloo

Speak Up post on the declining quality of magazine cover design, a follow-up to the Design Observer post I linked to earlier. This one has lots 'o links to some terrific magazine cover galleries.

One thing that hasn't come up yet (specifically, at least) is the current trend for designed-for-the-newstand magazine covers to include lots of bold numbers used in the typography. At the Society of Publication Designers conference in NYC last May, this caused a little debate. The folks from the New York Times Magazine more or less hinted not-so-subtlely during their presentation that we (graphic designers) should really push to use numbers on covers more sparingly, even though -- as far as type goes -- they look so darn tootin' good.

Like page numbers? I tried doing neat things graphically with page #s on a table of contents, but never on the covers - mostly because our sections were so small (usually 12-24 pages).

More along the lines of "5 Secrets the Government Doesn't Want You to Know" -- with the numeral being typeset at, like a gratuitous 280pt. or something.
