Kidd Is Godd
An article on book cover designer extraordinaire Chip Kidd, via
Arts Journal. Designing jackets for a major publishing house like Knopf would be as close to a "dream job" as I could aspire to. Kidd's work is as brilliant, whimsical and eye-popping as can be - although there have been examples where he's not as good. I bought the Lucille Ball biography Ball of Fire recently and was surprised to find it has a Kidd cover, since
the actual design is rather uninspiring.

Did you know there's a book about his design work? My husband just bought it, but I haven't looked at it yet.
Avoid the novel he wrote, though. Bleh.
I forgot to add that yes, I agree that some of his stuff can be really lacklustre. I figure those are instances of design-by-committee -- you know, the product of a series of compromises or a marketing exec looking over his shoulder and calling the shots -- rather than the design he would have picked himself. But maybe I'm being too charitable?
I have that book on my Amazon wishlist.
Also, my birthday will be here in two weeks (hint, hint).
Thanks for bringing him to my attention. He was born in my home town (Shillington, PA) along with John Updike. I noticed he designed an Updike cover.
