I haven’t read that book, Christiane – I went looking for it while writing the DVD Talk review, but it appears that it’s out of print. I read another Woolrich book a long time ago and really enjoyed it.

Watching that movie again reminded me of Stanwyck in “Jeopardy”, which has her similarly fretting and getting involved with criminals.

Love No Man of Her Own (Barbara Stanwyck forever!). Have you ever read the Cornell Woolrich book (I Married a Dead Man)? Great tight little noir book, with one of the creepiest endings around.

Thanks, John. I like how Joe E. Brown had this big, goofy face with an athletic body (there weren’t a whole lot of athletic ’30s movie stars). I will check out the films you mentioned.

A few clarifications: I wanted a pic of myself with the Colorado Blvd sign because that is a street Sheldon and Leonard mention a lot in “The Big Bang Theory.” The hippo in the pic of the Singer Sargent is me; the cute guy in the shape of a “T” is Matt. I made him pose for the pic that freezing cold afternoon at the Getty. He didn’t want to, but I think it’s a cute pic of him. Agree?

And I can’t help but notice how much that woman looks like Dana Cowin, Top Chef guest judge and editor of Food & Wine magazine.

It’s actually a fun game to play: walking through all that old art and pointing out what looks like whom.

Hi, I have a Hyacinth Hippo marked 1940 and Vernon Kilns that also has the number 88 on it. I put it on Ebay and a hippo fan wrote me to say my number needs to be in the 30′s for it to be “real.” I think it is 100% genuine in all respects but would like confirmation.

Can you look at the photo and tell me if this is real? I can’t find another one just like it, although on your website I see one that looks to be the same colors, style, etc. and I saw another on a different website that looks like it was made at the same time. It is as if Hyacinth was reproduced in various poses from the Fantasia Dance of the Hours ballet. I couldn’t figure out the “gravatar” so I’m sending you the Ebay link so you can see the photos and make a determination. Can you tell me what I have, please? Thanks!

Apparently Hollywood Cavalcade had one Alice Faye tune that was cut before the film was released. I suppose it was an attempt for Fox to mold Faye into a capital-A Actress, huh? (she actually delivered a decent performance)

I’ll have to check out Billy Rose’s Diamond Horseshoe – those Fox musicals can be heaps of kitschy fun.
