Thursday Miscellany

Because it’s too hot to go into detail:

  • TV Squad: Remembering Toonheads. Sad fact — Cartoon Network no longer has Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies, or anything pre-Scooby Doo on its schedule. Cartoon Alley on TCM is a good alternative, but they’ve been in repeats since January (new episodes resume in September).
  • New York magazine: In Defense of Star Jones Reynolds. Hmm, even during her fat years she was pretty freaky. The upside to all this is how “star jones” has taken hold as a verb, i.e. “I heard that she star jonesed the catering and gown at her lavish wedding.”
  • Interviews with super-cool bloggers Eye of the Goof and Exclamation Mark. Congratulations to both!
  • IFC will be premiering a new documentary this Sunday, Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema. Looks promising.
  • 1,500 of Your Favorite ’80s Videos, via William at Robot Action Boy. I heartily recommend the two awesomely awesome Electric Dreams clips — Philip Oakey’s “Together In Electric Dreams” and “The Duel” by Giorgio Moroder.

Matt, it’s funny the wacky things you & I have in common from time to time! Last night I called a friend & we talked about some pop culture things & I mentioned your site & that she would enjoy it. And lo, today you mention “Electric Dreams” in your Miscellany post. My friend & I are are amongst the small minority of people that actually saw that movie in a theater when it was originally released! I actually bought the LP after I saw the movie (who could resist Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder together?) and then years later I bought the CD. Where oh where is Lenny Von Dohlen (try to remember the cool blue loveliness of his eyes… umm, sorry). Also, thanks for the Ronnie Dyson song from the other day, I’ve always liked it! Those big swirling strings & silly lyrics “missing links and little kinks”!! Okay I must go watch the “Together in Electric Dreams” video now!

  2. Thanks, Susan! You know, I’ve never seen Electric Dreams — I just like the song! Hopefully it will come out on DVD soon for everyone to appreciate its (apparent) ’80s-ness.

  3. It ought to be noted that older cartoons, ie Toon Heads and the like, are regularly aired on Cartoon Network’s sister station Boomerang. It’s a bit of ghettoization, as I’m sure kids are far more aware of CN than Boomerang, but at least it’s still out there and readily available.

  4. Boomerang was good for awhile, but it was on a higher priced tier on our satellite service so we dropped it. One can only take so much ’70s Hanna Barbera.
